Rent a best friend
If I should apply
To become a forthcoming friend
-- or more ambitious still --
Your very best friend,
This may be quite the Odyssey
In the ever unfolding minutiae
Of maturing nearly as one.
The seven seas may well tell
Whether the tides and the stars
Would approve of such hiring process.
Smooth sailing never was part of the siren's song
But it could start a maiden voyage after all.
So if the stars should somehow align
As the auspicious becomings of mutual growth
Then perhaps you may also wish to apply
To become my muse after all.
But if the stars should hide in the sea
And the tidbits of reciprocal nourishment
Come out as stale, malty bread crumbs
You might instead rent the balming services
Of a serendipitous brother you never had.
